If I could...
I would donate all of my unnecessary belongings and live smaller. I often view my home, although small by standard, as a storage unit for my life's collected items. To downsize my "needs" would be liberating indeed! I hold on to these things tightly, however, as I may one day be in absolute need of that item tucked away in the back of the closet. And so goes the story with a hundred other items, stowed away for the day of necessity that looms ahead forever and is never realized. I heat and cool my home for these items, I light the hall and closets for them. If only I were not afraid of the things I may one day need, I could capture my ideal and live the small life I've always dreamed of: small consumption, small waste, small footprint. It is not to say that I live extravagantly, but there is more I could do if I did not fear being "without". A small life is rich with possibility; I could give more freely of my time and talents, be more mobile, live spontaneously and be more in accordance with the principles of Earth stewardship.
